Niche Platforms in Small Communities

Many people know about the app called “Nextdoor” , and how it can be a treasure trove of neighborhood drama and lost dogs, but some local businesses are jumping in to share ads and spice up the appeal.

Nextdoor has built a platform for small or local businesses to share ads on the platform to draw in members of the community. This is an incredibly useful tool for businesses looking to expand their local engagement. A big potential use for this is lawn companies, I see all the time members of my community asking for lawn care recommendations, so a local lawn company could really benefit from running ads on Nextdoor to boost business.

Focusing on niche platforms such as Nextdoor can help build a sense of community around your brand. People associate Nextdoor with their neighborhoods, big or small, so by seeing a business name show up on the app often, people will start to associate said business as local. A good axample is Firehouse subs. I am from Jacksonville, Florida, and Firehouse Subs began in this city. Although the brand has expanded all over the US, they run ads on Nextdoor just to be associated with that hometown / homegrown feeling.

Many businesses could benifit from other niche platforms like reddit, or even Facebook Groups. There are large communities in Facebook Groups that I would classify as niche, for example a Florida Kayaking group I am part of gets thousands of interactions a day. There is a notable small business that is active in the group that rents out kayaks and does tours in central Florida, and they have benefitted from being involved in that niche community.
