Is the Canon C200 Worth it in 2020?

TLDR: Yes. Yes it is. Why? Read below!

I had used the C100 for about 5 years, and a year ago I got the chance to pick up a C100 mkii. I have come to love the mkii and use it as my daily driver. Low light, mid day, studio work, and even live streaming. It is a beast! When I first began using the first gen c100 5 years ago I hated it. But to be honesty, I was a noob who just sold my 5Dmkii for a Sony mirrorless. I wasn’t a bad videographer, but it was my first experience with a real camera. It felt clunky, was super noisy (grainy) and the footage sucked to color grade. But after a year of use I learned to enjoy it. I figured out how to light better and get less noise, I figured out how to run and gun with a rig build, I really began enjoying using it.

Then came the mkii and it was everything I wanted in a camera. Paired with the right lens it was a workhorse. I have logged hundreds of hours in the mkii and love it. The dual native iso, the flippy screen, C-LOG, the auto-focus and ronin-ability is great. But now I have just picked up the C200.

I know what you’re thinking, it’s a 2 year old camera and the C70 just came out. But let me tell you this is one of the best cameras I’ve ever used. For just about $5,500 you can get 4k 60FPS footage, Pro-Res Raw, built in proxies and much more. I rigged mine in a cage with an Atmos Ninja V and it is killer. My footage has never looked better with the amount of dynamic range this camera captures. It is the best option for me, as someone who makes a few videos a week, and sometimes works on feature pieces a few times a year. Most of my footage is filmed in a well lit studio, but recently I’ve done projects on sailboats, at 5 AM in the harbor, at the beach at dusk, and in the woods at night. All of the footage is great even up to 2500 ISO. Minimal noise at that range when recording RAW. Everything I shoot looks much more professional and “cinematic” (as much as I hate that term).

All in all the C200 is a beast. I can’t think of a better camera for it’s price range.
